Cryotherapy or cold therapy is procedure in surface skin lesionsare exposed to for extremely cold temperature for a specific period of time with help of cryogens. Most commonly used cryogens to treat skin lesions Liquid nitrogen (temperature –196°C). It is usually safe and inexpensive treatment. Multiple sessions may be required to completely remove the skin lesion.

Cryotherapy has been successfully used to remove skin tags, warts and moles.Seborrhoeic keratosis, actinic keratosis, molluscum, keloids & hypertrophic scars also treated by cryotherapy.

How is cryotherapy done?

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen which flows through a cryoprobe (a needle like applicator), to create intense cold at the targeted area. Cryospray or a cotton tipped applicator can also be used depeneing on site and type of lesions. The nitrogen is applied to lesion for variable duration depending of size of lesion. This intense cold freeze the diseased or unwanted tissue and left for thaw. Sometimes theis freeze-thaw cycle can be repeated depending on type of lesion.

What does happen after cryotherapy treatment ?

Redness and stinging sensation may develop just after treatment which subside in few hours. Swellig and blistering may develop at site of cryotherapy but it is harmless. Treatment area should be wash normally and doesn’t not need any special attention. The blister dries with scab which fall off in 7-10 days. If some erosion left behind then moisturiser and antibacterial cream may be required.

Are there any risks associated with cryotherapy?

Following effects can be seen after cryotherapy:

• Numbness
• Tingling
• Redness
• Skin irritation

Most of the adverse effects of cryotherapy are temporary and resolve in 24 hours. You should see your doctor if they persist longer. Most common late complication is secondary infection in wound but it is easily treatble.

How are the results of cryotherapy?

The results are quite successful and to remove completely above mentioned skin lesions, multiple sessions may be required. Most of lesions resolve without leaving any change in skin.
